Typical responsibilities:
Welcoming participants and helping them settle in.
Setting up and packing away chess boards and equipment.
Helping participants find opponents and organise games.
Playing chess with participants where appropriate.
Helping beginners understand the basic rules of chess.
Encouraging children and young people to participate and interact positively.
Helping maintain a friendly, inclusive and safe environment.
Supporting the consistency of the weekly session.
The sessions are intended to be relaxed community chess meet-ups rather than formal lessons or tournaments.
Desirable skills:
An interest in chess and willingness to work with children, teenagers and members of the local community.
Volunteers do not need to be professional chess coaches or titled players. Basic knowledge of chess and the ability to explain the game in a friendly and patient manner would be an advantage.
Reliability, communication skills, patience and a positive attitude are particularly important.
