About the Voluntary Organisation:

The Malta Historical Society

The Malta Historical Society was established as a non-profit organisation in 1950 to pursue the study of the History of Malta, the diffusion of its knowledge, and the safeguarding of Maltese historical heritage. The society achieves its aims with the support of paying members and of sponsors, while raising funds through its publications. The Malta Historical Society promotes the study of Maltese History and supports historians by inviting speakers to deliver monthly public lectures and online seminars on current research topics. The society also publishes an annual journal, Melita Historica, with original papers on the history of Malta, ranging from prehistory to contemporary history. The journal is given to paid-up members, who are also kept regularly informed of the society’s events and who also enjoy up-to-date access to its online digitized publications. The society also publishes books on special occasions, such as historical anniversaries, as well as the Proceedings of History Week, a biennial conference with papers on current research as well as on a chosen theme. Furthermore, since 2014, the Malta Historical Society has encouraged excellence in historical research by awarding the best history papers written by scholars and by emerging historians in the biennial Malta Publication Awards.
