About the Voluntary Organisation:
Opening Doors Association
Opening Doors Association is a voluntary arts organisation that works for the active involvement of adults with intellectual disabilities in the artistic sector. To this end, Opening Doors runs creative artistic sessions, produces performances and organises inclusive workshops/jamming sessions in collaboration with diverse communities.
Opening Doors run six artistic groups in theatre, dance and music, with each genre consisting of two levels, plus a ballet group. The Level 1 groups focus on the foundation skills of each artistic genre, as well as exposure to performance opportunities and informal sharing of workshop material amongst collaborators. The Level 2 groups are a space for the development of higher artistic skills and performance, including the expansion of repertoire, which are presented during public local and national events such as festivals.
Over the last 15 years we have developed the skill base of our members, developed creative approaches to the making of performance, and provided opportunities for valuable integrated social interaction. OD’s programmes provide equal access to artistic development, placing inclusivity at the heart of what we do. We nurture the talents of members, helping them to thrive in their art forms whilst challenging barriers experienced by persons with intellectual disabilities, to enrich the creative abilities of all.
